Venice AI review: the private, uncensored ChatGPT alternative tested

Venice AI is the app that shows up when people finally give up on jailbreaking ChatGPT. It runs open-source models with no safety lecture bolted on, keeps your chat history in your browser instead of on a server, and has climbed into the top three Google results for “uncensored AI chat” almost entirely on that pitch.

The pitch is mostly true. But Venice is a private assistant, not a companion app, and the two get confused constantly. Here’s what it actually does, what “uncensored” means on each plan, and whether the privacy story holds up.

What Venice AI is

Venice was launched in 2024 by Erik Voorhees, the crypto founder behind ShapeShift, and it wears that DNA openly: you can pay in crypto, there’s a VVV token that grants API access, and the company line is that mainstream AI’s content rules are “ideological bias” in disguise. The product itself is a ChatGPT-style interface: text chat, image generation, document upload, web search, and a Characters section for community-built personas. It’s reportedly been valued at around $1 billion, which makes it the best-funded operation on this site by a wide margin.

The models are the interesting part. Venice doesn’t train its own frontier model; it hosts open-weight ones (Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral variants, and its own “Venice Uncensored” fine-tune) and routes your prompt to decentralized GPU providers. That’s the same basic idea we explain in our guide to getting truly uncensored AI chat: the way past a filter is a model that never had one, and Venice packages that up without making you run anything locally.

How uncensored is it, really?

For text, on a paid plan, very. Pick the Venice Uncensored model, go to Preferences → General and turn off the Mature Filter, then disable the Venice system prompt under Preferences → Text and write your own. After that, explicit roleplay, sexting, and adult topics that get you an instant refusal on ChatGPT just work. Users describe it as not lecturing, not deflecting, and not fading to black mid-scene. Reviewers note the uncensored model isn’t guaranteed to comply every single time, but it’s dramatically more permissive than anything mainstream.

Two hard limits stay in place regardless of settings: platform rules against anything involving minors and non-consensual content are enforced at the platform level, and they aren’t a toggle. That’s the right line, and it’s the same one every legitimate app on our censorship levels comparison draws.

The catch is the free tier. Free text chat is fairly open, but free users cannot generate explicit images. The uncensored image models (Lustify SDXL and an anime-focused WAI model are the ones people mention most) are Pro-only. If NSFW images are the reason you’re here, the free plan is a demo, not a product.

The privacy architecture, and what it doesn’t cover

This is where Venice earns its reputation, so it’s worth being precise.

Your conversations are encrypted and stored in your browser’s local storage. Venice’s servers don’t keep them. When you send a prompt, it goes encrypted through Venice’s proxy to a GPU provider, which decrypts only the prompt (no account, no IP, no history attached), generates the reply, streams it back, and purges it. Venice says it logs account events like sign-ins but never conversation content. A free account needs an email or a crypto wallet key; Pro billing goes through Stripe or crypto.

That’s a genuinely better design than the “we encrypt at rest but our staff can read it” setup most companion apps run, which we broke down in our data privacy deep-dive. But three things get lost in the marketing:

  • The GPU provider sees your prompt in plaintext during inference. It can’t tie it to you, but “no one ever sees it” isn’t accurate.
  • There’s no independent third-party security audit as of mid-2026. Every privacy claim above is Venice describing itself.
  • Local-only storage cuts both ways. Chats don’t sync across devices, and if you clear your browser data, they’re gone permanently. Pro adds an encrypted backup-and-restore option, but it’s manual.

So, is Venice AI safe? Safer than nearly any alternative on the data-collection axis, with the caveat that “private” and “audited” are different words.

As a companion: the honest gap

Venice is built as an assistant with adult content allowed, and it shows the moment you try to use it as a girlfriend app. The Characters section (with a Mature Content toggle for adult community personas) gives you personality templates, and community-tuned characters like the much-shared “Jae’s GLM” push the permissiveness further. But there’s no relationship memory that persists across devices, no avatar that sends selfies as the scene develops, no voice calls, and no mobile app polish. Each conversation is a document you keep, not a companion that remembers you.

If what you want is a persistent partner with a face and a memory, that’s a different category, covered in our deep-memory companion comparison. Venice competes with ChatGPT, not with Candy.ai.

Pricing

Four tiers as of mid-2026. Credits (100 = $1) pay for frontier models, video, and premium image generation that sit outside the flat allowance.

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$010 text prompts/day, 15 image prompts/day, base models, Safe Mode images only
Pro$18/mo ($149/yr)Unlimited text, 1,000 images/day, uncensored image models, all Pro models, 100 credits/mo, encrypted backup
Pro Plus$68/moPro plus 7,500 credits/mo with 2-month rollover
Max$200/moPro plus 22,500 credits/mo with 3-month rollover

Pro at $18 is fair for unlimited uncensored text plus a thousand images a day. The thing to watch is that the newest image models often bill in credits rather than counting against the 1,000, so heavy users of the best-looking models can end up buying credit packs on top. Our pricing comparison covers why that pattern tends to cost more than the sticker price.

One quirk: staking VVV tokens unlocks API access without a subscription. Interesting for developers, irrelevant for everyone else, and the token itself has drawn criticism for heavy whale concentration. Don’t buy it as a way to save on chat.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Genuinely uncensored text on Pro, with no filter to fight
  • Chats stored locally, not on Venice’s servers
  • Crypto payment and wallet-only sign-up available
  • Wide model choice, including open-weight frontier models
  • Free tier is usable for text with no card required

Cons:

  • Explicit image generation is paywalled behind Pro
  • No independent security audit yet
  • No cross-device sync; clear your cache and everything’s gone
  • Not a companion app: no persistent partner, selfies, or voice
  • Premium image models drain credits on top of the subscription

Verdict

Venice AI is the best answer we’ve found to “I want ChatGPT without the filter and without the surveillance.” The uncensored models deliver, the privacy design is real even if it’s unaudited, and $18 a month for unlimited access is reasonable. Where it loses points is scope: the free tier keeps explicit images locked, and anyone expecting a girlfriend experience will find a very capable, very private text box.

Rating: 4/5 — the strongest private uncensored assistant you can use in a browser, held back by a paywalled image tier and a feature set that stops well short of a companion.

If a relationship-style companion with images and memory is what you’re after, the NSFW-first apps below do that job far better, and they never had a filter to switch off either.
